How does it all work?
Once the contest starts on February 27, 2015, teacher-guided student groups (“Contestants”) may begin submitting their contest entries through the video sumbission form. Contest entries must be submitted by April 15, 2015 in order to be considered. For detailed instructions, see Video Submission Guidelines.
A complete contest entry must include:
- • Video segment of 2-5 minutes
- • Video/project title accompanied by a 50-word description
- • Group name, school, grade level, and state
Share this contest with friends and fellow students! Groups are encouraged to visit the Cheng & Tsui website or our Facebook page for additional information and updates during the contest period.
From April 15-24th, the Cheng & Tsui contest committee will select the top finalists based on the quality and creativity of the videos, cultural knowledge, and language proficiency. The finalists will be announced on April 24, 2015 via the Cheng & Tsui website.
From April 24-30th, the public may vote for their favorite video on the Cheng & Tsui website. Each viewer may vote once, so be sure to view as many videos as you can to select the best! The winner and runners-up will be announced on the Cheng & Tsui website on May 1, 2015!
-
How long should my video be?
It doesn’t have to be long, about two to five minutes.
-
What types of video subjects are eligible for submission?
Your video must have either a language-learning or cultural focus. Beyond that, use your creativity to show what you know! For example, you can act out a Cheng & Tsui textbook dialogue like those found in the Integrated Chinese or Adventures in Japanese series, conduct an interview using your second language, prepare a skit with your classmates, demonstrate how to make or do something that you’ve learned about, present some interesting cultural information you’ve researched, or share with your friends who don’t speak any Asian languages some of the fun and cool idioms or culture knowledge you’ve gained as is done in our Kù Chinese video clips!
-
Can I use any English in my video?
Your video can include English, but the target language should be used as much as possible. As in the examples provided, you may add subtitles for the target language.
-
What are the prizes for the winners?
Our mission at Cheng & Tsui is to “bring Asia to the world.” With that in mind, we are offering the following prizes for the winning contestants:
- First Prize—$1,000 cash to be used for enhancing your language-learning curriculum (such as through an event, a field trip, a guest speaker, or the like) or $1,500 worth of Cheng & Tsui products.
- Second Prize—One teacher badge for admission to the 2015 ACTFL Conference plus money toward a class celebration (total value $300) or $400 worth of Cheng & Tsui products.
- Third Prize—Language-specific cultural gifts for students or $100 worth of Cheng & Tsui products.
-
What are the criteria for judging the contest submissions?
The judges will be looking for the quality and creativity of your video and the relevance and accuracy of the information you present. Of course your language proficiency will be important as well!
-
Who are the judges?
The team of judges is made up of our Cheng & Tsui language and cultural experts. They are editors, native speakers, and technical gurus with an eye and ear for talent. They will evaluate all contest entries and will choose the top finalists. The winners will be determined by public vote on the Cheng & Tsui website.
-
How and when does the public vote?
The finalists will be uploaded on the Cheng & Tsui website on April 24, and public voting will be open through April 30, 2015. Voters should view each video finalist and cast one vote for the entry that they feel offers the most creativity, presents the most compelling content, and uses the target language accurately.
