Bilingual Chinese-English Editor

Leading U.S. publisher of educational materials in the areas of Asian languages and cultural studies for the K-12 and higher education markets seeks experienced bilingual Chinese-English freelance editor. This is a remote role with flexible hours. 

In this position, you will create and edit content for a variety of print and digital Chinese language learning materials. In addition to strong Chinese writing and editorial skills, a compelling candidate will have extensive experience working with young people in both China and the United States.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Write reading/listening passages, stories, lesson plans, exercises, rubrics, and other instructional content
  • Edit content created by teachers and other writers as necessary to improve quality and ensure that project specifications are met
  • Copyedit Chinese language content within a bilingual textbook context

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • BA/BS degree, preferably in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language
  • Superior native proficiency (written and verbal) in Mandarin Chinese in addition to strong English language skills
  • In-depth knowledge of current Chinese culture and Chinese youth
  • Writing and editorial experience in world languages curriculum materials development, coupled with an understanding of the interests of both American and Chinese middle school and high school students
  • Strategic and efficient in planning and executing to ensure consistent on-time delivery of assignments
  • Well-developed communication skills for effective remote work
  • Excellent writing, grammar, spelling, and proofreading skills, as well as accuracy and attention to detail
  • Understanding of complex interdependencies among different book project components 
  • Strong MS Word, MS Excel, and Adobe Acrobat skills, with Photoshop experience a plus
  • Knowledge of U.S. educational standards (ACTFL) and experience teaching Chinese in the U.S. classroom preferred, especially at the middle and high school levels

Staff Accountant

Leading educational publisher of Asian language and culture publications in print and digital formats for K-12 and higher education markets seeks an experienced Staff Accountant to join its growing team.

Position Summary:  The Accountant is responsible for, but not limited to, maintaining the day-to-day accounting functions, accruals, monthly statement reconciliations, annual year-end preparation, and performing general accounting functions as required.

Essential Job Duties shall include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Generate and report on monthly financials which include income statements, balance sheets, and cash reports
  • Manage Accounts Receivables, including invoicing, making deposits, issuing monthly invoice statements, maintaining customer and vendor records, generating aging reports, and helping with collections
  • Manage Accounts Payables including issuing purchase orders, making payments, accruing monthly author royalties, reconciling vendor and credit card statements, maintaining vendor contracts and records 
  • Administer and track publishing project costs
  • Maintain and reconcile all G/L
  • Prepare biweekly payroll for outside service, input 401K enrollment and deposits
  • Reconcile multiple bank accounts monthly
  • Prepare year-end documents for tax accountants, issue author royalty statement, and send out annual 1099s 
  • Assist with the annual budgeting and auditing requirements
  • Administer all business, sales, and payroll taxes as due and keep up with changing requirements
  • Review and maintain all financial and insurance contracts/documents securely
  • Practice a philosophy of constant improvement to suggest ways to systematize and automate processes
  • Perform other related duties as may be requested

Key Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent
  • Extensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • 3 or more years of full-charge bookkeeping experience
  • Proficient in MSWord, MSExcel, and comfortable with technology and learning new software programs.
  • Prior experience with latest ERP software, such as Netsuite, will be helpful.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and accurate, with the ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced work environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interface well with colleagues and external contacts

Operations and Finance Director

Cheng & Tsui, leading publisher of Asian languages and cultures educational materials based in Boston, is seeking an experienced, tech-savvy, and results-driven Operations and Finance Director to administer all finance and operations functions and anticipate the needs of a company growing in the digital environment. Working closely with the company founder and President, and participating as a member of the senior management team, the Operations and Finance Director ensures organizational effectiveness and profitability by implementing and improving operational and financial strategies, policies, processes, and practices. The Director oversees budget-based projects’ execution, with immediate emphasis on selecting and implementing ERP/CRM/e-Commerce website integration which will work seamlessly with third-party service providers in warehouse/fulfillment and in e-Learning technology platforms.

Required Responsibilities

  • Assess and recommend improvements to operational systems and processes to support financial goals requiring changing needs and resources. Execute and implement business strategies across functional areas.
  • Lead assessment, selection, implementation and integration of new ERP, new e-Commerce website, and other similar digital workflow systems with Salesforce CRM in collaboration with all relevant department staff. 
  • Prepare budget and issue RFPs, handle vendor negotiations and contracts, and project-manage customization of modules.
  • Oversee user testing, rollout, and staff training.  
  • Manage and ensure that warehouse and fulfillment services involving inventory, in-house customer service and office administration are all efficiently integrated with new ERP, e-Commerce website, Salesforce CRM, and company’s digital products’ platforms. 
  • Work collaboratively with the President & CEO and senior managers to develop annual plans and long-term strategic plans to meet sales growth and profit objectives, while ensuring customer and staff satisfaction.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor project and departmental budgets in collaboration with management team. Review status with department managers on a regular basis.
  • Develop financial formulas and internal procedures to assess the feasibility, practicality, and profitability of new products and business ventures.
  • Assess competitive landscape and work with sales, marketing, and editorial to set product price points by developing competitive pricing strategies while maintaining appropriate margins.
  • Review and improve existing procedures for budgets, accounts receivable, and accounts payable to ensure accuracy and efficiency. 
  • Provide regular financial reports and analyses consistent with publishing industry standards to ensure healthy cash flow and to support forecasts for a constantly changing market environment. 
  • Manage capital assets, equipment, and other properties to ensure efficiencies, their proper repair and maintenance, and their replacement/upgrade purchases. Determine office space allocations and assess resource needs for all departments.
  • Provide guidance, direction, and support to direct reports and foster their professional growth.
  • Maintain an up-to-date customer and vendor database as a valuable company asset.

Related Responsibilities

  • Propose and administer a risk management plan to protect intellectual properties and proprietary information. Find cost effective approaches to minimize risks in network administration, web hosting, internal and external piracy, etc. 
  • Oversee human resources and employee relations; assess policies and procedures related to staff recruitment, training, reviews, salaries, and benefits, personnel handbook. 
  • Help to write, review, and/or negotiate legal and financial documents such as vendor RFPs and contracts, author contracts, royalties, distribution agreements, permissions, insurance policies, copyrights, and the like.
  • Help negotiate and administer RFPs and contracts with customers, vendors, suppliers, and resellers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in Asian cultures a must and knowledge of an Asian language a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher with focus on finance or accounting and interest in technology.
  • Minimum of 6+ years of operational and finance experience in lean and entrepreneurial companies, preferably with 3+ years in textbook publishing. 
  • Financial acumen with an emphasis on data analytics and data-driven decision making.
  • A hands-on manager with the willingness to roll up her/his sleeves to meet business objectives.
  • Must be an organized, long-term, strategic planner with strong analytical skills, attention to detail.
  • Experience in budget creation, strategic planning, human resources, legal, IT/Systems support, , cost analysis, and negotiations.
  • Resourcefulness in setting priorities in a changeable, fast-moving environment where action is driven by customer demand, competition, products, and sales performance.
  • Able to find clarity and solutions in situations that can often be ambiguous and urgent.
  • Excellent oral and written interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to foster a company culture based on teamwork, integrity, commitment, and continuous improvement.
  • Have skills in staff motivation, development, and retention.
