Sales Manager

Cheng & Tsui, the leading publisher of Asian language textbooks and digital products, is seeking an energetic and results-driven Sales Manager. The ideal candidate has a background in educational publishing and will drive growth, build brand awareness, and create market demand internationally by effectively managing and training a team in Sales and collaborating with Marketing.

The Manager will provide strategic sales activities for the inside sales representatives, who operate primarily as consultative product experts, by training them on systems for managing a territory through effective use of CRM tools, following up leads, providing support to customers making product decisions, and closing business. The Sales Manager will be responsible for establishing a collaborative sales culture within the team and mentoring them and developing protocols for best practices.  The Manager will also participate and collaborate with Marketing in strategic and innovative multi-channel marketing plans based on expert product knowledge and customer insights. This is a “hands-on” role and requires the Manager to take charge of one of the territories directly and have the ability to thrive in a small, fast-paced and changing entrepreneurial environment. Keen interest in global education and/or bilingual ability in Chinese are very much a plus.  


  • Provide overall direction and planning for national and international sales operations for Asian language and culture educational textbooks.
  • Prioritize and allocate resources to attain an optimal mix of direct selling and research activities.
  • Articulate and implement sales plans and strategies to attain annual and long-term company revenue goals supported by annual sales forecasts with cost-effective budgets that align with the sales projections.
  • Train, manage, and mentor an inside sales team through solid sales and product training, analysis of monthly results, and a fair and attractive incentive plan.
  • Help, guide, and thoroughly execute detailed school materials adoptions bids.
  • Collaborate with Marketing to effectively address customer needs with the goals of stimulating revenue growth, generating sales leads, and increasing brand recognition.
  • Participate in reviewing marketing copy, messaging, and design of print and digital media, such as company catalogs and website from the sales perspective.
  • Initiate, train, and lead cross-functional team members to produce sales presentations and webinars and other associated messaging needed by sales.
  • Guide the planning and scheduling of national exhibits, workshops, trade shows based on relevance and resources.
  • Provide qualitative and quantitative sales input into the product development process to help identify new product opportunities, evaluate product proposals, and communicate user feedback on existing products relevant to future revisions.
  • Participate in developing competitive pricing strategies while maintaining reasonable margins.
  • Oversee the effective use of the CRM system (Salesforce), ensuring that it is populated with all relevant data from active sales efforts for effective outreach and report generation regarding, but not limited to, K-12 and Higher Ed customers and prospects with Asian language programs around the world.
  • Grow and maintain the customer/prospect (e)mail list as a valuable company asset.
  • Analyze processes and workflow to further sales automation to improve efficiencies.
  • Hire, train, and manage staff as needed, performing all related HR responsibilities.
  • Evaluate and report monthly on the results of all sales activities to the President and CEO together with recommendations for action.


  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Ten years’ hands-on experience in sales, preferably in K-12 and Higher Ed educational publishing with knowledge of schools adoptions process 
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience supervising or managing a sales team
  • Strong consultative sales background and ability to train and develop new or junior staff
  • Experience in using CRM, preferably Salesforce, and strong analytical ability to use data to drive creative and effective sales campaigns and reports
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills and a strong attention to detail, accuracy, and quality, that lead to timely and responsive follow-through
  • Effective people, training, managerial, and leadership skills that are compatible with a collaborative work culture
  • Love for education, pedagogy, and Asian languages and cultures preferred.

Digital Language Editor and Tester

Leading publisher of educational materials in the areas of Asian languages and cultural studies for the K-12 and higher education markets seeks a Digital Language Editor and Tester to join its growing team. This can be an entry-level position for the right candidate, but experienced individuals are also encouraged to apply.

As a member of the digital team, the Digital Language Editor and Tester will work closely with the digital, editorial, sales, and marketing teams to contribute to the growth of the ChengTsui Web App, our digital language-learning tool and platform.


  • In collaboration with the digital and editorial teams, build out the digital learning components of new titles, such as creating the digital equivalent of print workbook exercises and other interactive content for the ChengTsui Web App
  • Contribute to the design and transfer of digital content of titles moving from older web-based formats to the ChengTsui Web App
  • Test and verify all language-specific content of both current and new offerings on the Web App
  • Contribute to on-going application testing; report bugs and track fixes through the product development life cycle from initial testing of new features, to smoke testing, to final user acceptance testing and verification on the production site
  • Monitor and troubleshoot customer-reported issues, engaging directly with customers on first-line customer support of the Web App; forward customer-reported issues to development team as needed
  • Collect customer feedback for improvements
  • Collaborate with digital and other teams on feature and functionality improvements
  • Participate in regular team meetings and communication channels on project status

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Excellent skills in English
  • Strong reading proficiency in Mandarin Chinese or Japanese. Bilingual English-Chinese a plus.

Production Editor

FUNCTION: Leading Boston-based educational publisher of Asian language and cultural studies materials for K-12 and higher ed markets seeks a production editor to handle various aspects of editorial production, including:

  • coordinating projects between Editorial team and typesetting vendors, freelance designers, and illustrators throughout the production process, from manuscript delivery to final files 
  • communicating changes in schedule, template, and process to all stakeholders, keeping them updated on all details of projects
  • checking page proofs for design inconsistencies throughout the production cycle; investigating and solving problems as needed
  • designing or updating projects as necessary using InDesign 
  • conducting photo research, downloading/optimizing images, and tracking art files
  • assisting with design work for Marketing by creating collateral such as flyers, web ads, email blasts, gift items
  • helping with proofreading, cold reads, and style tagging 
  • maintaining and updating all pertinent files and databases
  • performing other duties as needed or as requested


  • Three years’ experience in print book production
  • Solid facility using Adobe InDesign 
  • Excellent English proofreading skills 
  • Strong working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, conventional and electronic prepress, and publishing procedures

Educational Sales Representative

The inside sales rep will help develop and execute strategic sales plans by contacting K-12 School and Higher Education language teachers, professors, and administrators within their assigned territory to promote and sell our textbooks, supplements, and digital products while branding the company.


  • Manage a sales territory to increase annual baseline sales within the assigned territory
  • Meet or exceed the annual sales goal for your assigned territory
  • Develop multi-channel outreach strategies with management to increase sales through outbound calls, emails, and webinars 
  • Enter and update customer data and track all leads in Salesforce
  • Build and maintain an active pipeline of prospects and customers using inbound and outbound marketing strategies

Position Description

Creates and edits content for a variety of print and digital Chinese language learning materials. Within a project, coordinates and reviews the work of authors; edits and prepares manuscript; edits typeset pages (print or digital); shares products’ highlights with sales and marketing

Major Responsibilities

  • Help develop middle school, high school, and/or college Chinese and other Asian language-learning materials
  • Write lesson plans, exercises, rubrics, and other instructional content
  • Edit manuscripts prepared by in-house and outside authors for clarity, organization, content, and pedagogy in accordance with project guidelines and company standards of quality
  • Review, copy edit, proofread, style tag textbook manuscripts, digital content, audio, video, eBooks, and marketing pieces
  • Develop and check page layouts, and implement all steps in the production of assigned projects
  • Collaborate with Production in scheduling, tracking, and releasing project materials
  • Work closely with Marketing to communicate project details and specifications for marketing/sales efforts
  • Participate in promotional webinars and in-person product presentations and training
  • Conduct competitive analysis of print and digital products, report findings, and train sales reps on the current competition
  • Perform other duties as needed and requested


  • Native English reading and writing skills; excellent reading and writing proficiency in Chinese with knowledge of pinyin
  • Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style or equivalent and minimum of three years’ experience in editing and project management
