Business Manager, Educational Publishing

Cheng & Tsui, leading publisher of Asian languages and cultures educational materials based in Boston, is seeking an experienced, tech-savvy, hands-on, and results-driven Business Manager to manage the needs of a company growing in the digital environment. Reporting to the President and participating as a member of the management team, the Business Manager ensures organizational effectiveness and profitability by developing and implementing operational and financial strategies, policies, processes, and practices, while also leading the accounting and the customer service group. The Manager oversees financial management, budget creation, strategic planning, human resources, general administration, contracts and legal documents, ERP/CRM/web integration and effectiveness, IT administration risk management, inventory control and manufacturing.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the fiscal and physical assets of the company so as to (a) provide adequate logistical support to all departments, and (b) to maximize the before-tax operating margin.
  • Assess and recommend improvements to operational systems and processes to support financial goals requiring changing needs and resources. Execute and implement business strategies across functional areas.
  • Develop financial formulas and internal procedures to assess the feasibility, practicality, and profitability of new products and business ventures.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor project and departmental budgets in collaboration with management team. Review status with department managers on a regular basis.
  • Implement procedures for budgets, accounts receivable, and accounts payable for healthy cash flow. Develop financial reports and analyses consistent with publishing industry standards.
  • Provide prompt monthly feedback to the CEO of financial results relative to budgeted expectations and significant variances.
  • Oversee the timely collection of receivables and disbursement of payables.
  • Manage capital assets, equipment, and other properties in terms of repair, maintenance, and purchase. Determine office space allocations and assess resource needs for all departments.
  • Manage inventory, manufacturing, accounting, and office administration.
  • Assess competitive landscape and work with sales, marketing, and acquisitions to set competitive pricing strategies, to maintain market leadership, while maintaining appropriate margins.
  • Write, review, edit, and/or negotiate legal and financial documents such as vendor RFPs and contracts, author contracts, HR policies, distribution agreements, permissions, insurance policies, copyrights, and the like.
  • Propose and administer a risk management plan to protect intellectual properties and proprietary information. Find cost effective approaches to minimize risks in network administration, cloud services, web hosting, internal and external piracy, etc.
  • Provide guidance, direction, and support to direct reports and foster their professional growth.
  • Oversee human resources and employee relations; assess and update policies and procedures related to staff recruitment, training, reviews, salaries, and benefits, personnel handbook.
  • Lead needs assessment, implementation, and project management of digital workflow systems when needed in collaboration with technology consultants and department managers, including providing RFPs, handling vendor negotiations, customization of modules, user testing, rollout, and training.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in business administration or its equivalent and interest in technology.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of administration operations and finance experience with 2+ years in textbook publishing preferred.
  • Must be an organized, long-term, strategic planner with strong analytical skills, attention to detail.
  • Expertise in strategic planning, human resources, legal, IT/Systems support, negotiations, financial analysis, and budget creation.
  • Resourcefulness in setting priorities in a changeable, fast-moving environment where action is driven by customer demand, competition, products, and sales performance.
  • Able to find clarity and solutions in situations that can often be ambiguous and urgent.
  • Excellent oral and written interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to foster a company culture based on teamwork, integrity, commitment, and continuous improvement.
  • Have skills in staff motivation, development, and retention
  • Interest in global education preferred and knowledge of an Asian language a plus.

Bilingual English-Chinese Sales Account Representative

Cheng & Tsui, the leading publisher in Asian language and culture textbooks and supplements based in Boston, is seeking individuals with educational sales experience for the position of Sales Account Representative. The inside sales rep will help develop and execute strategic sales plans by contacting K-12 School and Higher Education language teachers, professors, and administrators within their assigned territory to promote and sell our textbooks, supplements, and digital products while branding the company.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a sales territory to increase annual baseline sales within the assigned territory
  • Meet or exceed the annual sales goal(s) for your assigned territory
  • Develop multi-channel outreach strategies with management to increase branding of company  through outbound sales calls, emails, etc.
  • Maintain customer records, input, update and track all leads in our Customer Relationship Management  (Salesforce) database
  • Build an active pipeline of prospective customers and new accounts to help with business development
  • Develop and maintain positive, long-term professional relationships with customers
  • Answer customers’ questions about products, prices, and availability
  • Convey product features based on analyses of customers’ needs and on knowledge of product features
  • Recommend the correct products or assist customers in making product selections based on their needs and product specifications
  • Conduct product presentations, especially on the use of technology in the classroom
  • Travel to academic institutions and exhibit at conferences as needed
  • Collaborate with colleagues in editorial and marketing to exchange customer feedback, market information, and sales and marketing strategies

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Experience in inside sales, customer service, publishing
  • Knowledge of CRM (preferably Salesforce)
  • Strong in planning, organizing, executing, and following through with work that requires attention to detail
  • Motivated and committed to meeting and exceeding revenue goals
  • Self-starter with the ability to work well independently and in a team environment
  • Superior verbal, written, and general communication skills

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of Asian language and culture and interest in education and effective pedagogy, especially in instructional technology
  • Experience in world language teaching
  • Speak an Asian language, especially Mandarin Chinese

Leading publisher of educational materials in the areas of Asian languages and cultural studies for the K-12 and higher education markets seeks a Bilingual English-Chinese Editor to join its growing team.

Position Description

Creates and edits content for a variety of print and digital Chinese language learning materials. Within a project, coordinates and reviews the work of authors; edits and prepares manuscript; edits typeset pages (print or digital); shares products’ highlights with sales and marketing

Major Responsibilities

  • Help develop middle school, high school, and/or college Chinese and other Asian language-learning materials
  • Write lesson plans, exercises, rubrics, and other instructional content
  • Edit manuscripts prepared by in-house and outside authors for clarity, organization, content, and pedagogy in accordance with project guidelines and company standards of quality
  • Review, copy edit, proofread, style tag textbook manuscripts, digital content, audio, video, eBooks, and marketing pieces
  • Develop and check page layouts, and implement all steps in the production of assigned projects
  • Collaborate with Production in scheduling, tracking, and releasing project materials
  • Work closely with Marketing to communicate project details and specifications for marketing/sales efforts
  • Participate in promotional webinars and in-person product presentations and training
  • Conduct competitive analysis of print and digital products, report findings, and train sales reps on the current competition
  • Perform other duties as needed and requested

Qualifications

  • Native English reading and writing skills; excellent reading and writing proficiency in Chinese with knowledge of pinyin
  • Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style or equivalent and minimum of three years’ experience in editing and project management
  • Highly organized with strong time management skills and meticulous attention to detail
  • Assertive, professional communication skills as well as comfort working both individually and in teams

Customer Service Specialist/Administrative Assistant

Leading textbook publisher of print and digital educational products in the areas of Asian languages and cultural studies seeks someone committed to a career in providing excellent customer service and administrative support.  

Major Responsibilities

  • Provide outstanding customer service by handling inquiries about print and digital products, processing phone, fax, and online orders, and handling returns and past due accounts in a timely manner
  • Assist customers with digital products and fulfill sample requests
  • Provide administrative support including mail sorting, filing, communicating with vendors, handling schedules, travel, and calendars
  • Assist in human resources, benefits administration, research, and process documentation with proper record-keeping
  • Manage permissions requests, trademark filings, subscriptions, documentation, and the like
  • Perform backup bookkeeping role in invoicing, credit review, collections
  • Oversee office needs including supplies, equipment, and office space
  • Act as liaison to property management company for office repairs and maintenance
  • Support in other areas as needed

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years’ customer service and administrative experience
  • Proficiency with MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Suite, utilizing websites, with high comfort using and supporting technology
  • Familiarity with ERPs assumed and CRMs a plus
  • Must be highly organized and enjoy multi-tasking
  • Must be very thorough in taking directions, keeping track of projects and requests, and completing tasks accurately and in a timely manner
  • Ability to communicate clearly and courteously in writing and orally
  • Must have understanding of and skills in handling sensitive and confidential material
  • Possess a basic understanding of business practices in general, and office administration and customer service specifically
  • Flexibility and a positive attitude essential in a fast-paced environment requiring excellent multitasking skills
  • Must have strong organizational skills and be able to prioritize work independently
