2025 Professional Development CLTA-USA Grant Recipients

At Cheng & Tsui, ongoing learning is key to effective teaching. That’s why we are honored to support Chinese language educators through our annual Professional Development Awards for Teachers of Chinese, presented in partnership with the CLTA-USA Annual Conference on May 10, 2025, in New York City.

First established in 2000, these awards provide funding for pre-collegiate (including heritage schools) and collegiate Chinese teachers to participate in conferences, workshops, and in-service training experiences or collaborate with mentor teachers in order to learn and grow professionally. By investing in professional development, Cheng & Tsui  seeks to empower educators to continue evolving their teaching practices and enriching their classrooms to benefit their students!

We are thrilled to announce the 2025 award recipients, who will present their work at the 2025 CLTA Annual Conference:

Ye Zheng, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
Presentation: “Chinese Modal Verb Teaching: An Analysis of Hui and Neng Misuse Among L2 Learners”

Wei-Yi Lee, University of Georgia
Presentation: “Understanding Perceptions of Mandarin Chinese Varieties Among Chinese Heritage Learners of Taiwanese Ethnicity in the United States”

Yi-lu Kuo, University of Chicago
Presentation: “A Comprehensive Approach to Developing Chinese Language Skills in Beginning Heritage Learners”

Each of these projects reflects thoughtful, research-based approaches to improving instruction and deepening our understanding of Chinese language learning in diverse contexts.
