Cheng & Tsui “Language in Motion” Video Contest Raises Students’ Confidence in Language Learning

Monday, July 13, 2015

Boston, MA – June 25, 2015

The “Language in Motion” Video Contest hosted by Cheng & Tsui this spring invited students of Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean to showcase their second language skills in a playful and unique way.

More than 55 videos were submitted through the Cheng & Tsui contest website. The entries varied from textbook dialogue skits and grammar point tutorials to cultural street interviews and a puppet show. The entries were judged based on creativity of presentation, content accuracy, and language proficiency, and the top 3 winners were Nicholas J. Marchese from Friends Academy, Chinese 2 class from Cater G. Woodson Academy, and Kevin, Tim, and Ryan from Richmond Christian School.

“When we first heard about the competition from Ma Laoshi we were excited. Stone, Noah, Ma Laoshi and I began brainstorming immediately,” said Kaleb, student of Chinese from Cater G. Woodson Academy. “We decided to have a cook off (in Chinese) and I’m glad we did. It was a lot of fun showing how much Ma Laoshi has taught us over the years. We had a blast participating and I hope we can do it next year.”

“To me speaking in Chinese is fun as well as learning about the cultures. This competition raised my confidence exponentially. In the future I will know how to cook certain Chinese dishes and advance in my Chinese vocabulary,” said Stone, who participated in the cook-off show.

Cheng & Tsui has hosted many popular video contests in the past to promote the excitement of language learning and to build a student community. “We really appreciate that your company (Cheng & Tsui) provided this opportunity. It is not about money or prize. It is a valuable experience to make students more interested in Chinese, to make students “produce” more, (the output of language learning), and even brings the relationship of our Chinese learning students more bonded together. We worked hard as a team. The team in which everyone fights for the same target. It is just AWESOME!” said Chi Ma, Chinese teacher of the second-place winning team at Cater G. Woodson Academy.
