Go Far with Chinese Level 2 uses a proficiency-based approach to give learners a solid foundation in all four language skills. In Level 2, students accompany American teenagers Isabella and Martin Lopez as they plan a trip and travel west to Xi’an and the surrounding countryside. Topics build upon students' existing cultural knowledge of China, ranging from Chinese performance art, ethnic groups, and Chinese history. 

Following the same structure as Level 1, Level 2 also features:

  • Emphasis on building reading stamina
  • More support for in-class target language use
  • Systematic recycling of previously learned language

Level 2 is intended to be used for one year at the high school level and introduces approximately 300 new words.

Go Far with Chinese is a comprehensive, proficiency-based Chinese language program for middle school and high school students. The series provides age-appropriate content to meet the specific needs and interests of teenage language learners, while building articulation to college-level programs, including our internationally acclaimed Integrated Chinese series. 

Students follow Martin and Isabella Lopez, two American teenagers whose mother receives a work assignment in Beijing. Each chapter brings a new episode in the lives of the Lopezes, allowing students to experience the excitement and challenges of adapting to life in China. 

Thoughtful vocabulary control and contextual grammar instruction help students achieve intermediate-low level proficiency in Chinese. Engaging cultural features jam-packed with up-to-date information about the lives of young Chinese people also help students connect to and apply the content. The series' robust teacher resources, developed in collaboration with a team of experienced educators, make it easy to create an effective, enjoyable, and flexible learning experience.

Senior Curriculum Adviser

Ying Jin is a Chinese teacher in the Fremont Union High School District in California. She has more than 20 years of experience in Chinese instruction and is active in the teaching community through STARTALK, CLASS, California Language Teachers' Association, and more. In 2018, ACTFL named her the National Language Teacher of the Year, the first Chinese language teacher to receive this honor. She is passionate about promoting greater understanding of Chinese language and culture.

Lead Instructional Contributors

Chunmei Guan is a Chinese instructor at Logansport Community School Corporation in Indiana. She was named Chinese Teacher of the Year and earned the Outstanding Contribution award by the Indiana Chinese Language Teachers Assocation in 2016. She serves as the 2nd Vice-President of the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Assocation and as an associate member of the National Council of State Supervisors for Languages. She is also a member of CLASS, CLTA-US, ACTFL, and ASSCE. She is dedicated to promoting cross-cultural and global awareness as an educator in the field of world language instruction.

Cilei Han is a teacher of Chinese language at Lake Oswego and Lakeridge High Schools in Oregon as well as a Challenge Program Instructor at Portland State University. She serves as a board member of the CLTA-US, as a chair of the CLTA K-12 Working Group, and as president of her regional Chinese Language Teachers Association-Oregon. She is dedicated to assisting in the development of stronger K-12 Chinese programs nationwide.

Mairead Harris is the Chinese language teacher at Stowe Middle and High School in Stowe, Vermont, as well as the associate director of the Middlebury Chinese School. She serves as a board member for CLTA-US and the New England Chinese Language Teachers Association (NECLTA). She is dedicated to promoting collaboration and professional learning between educators in K-12 and higher education, as well as global understanding among students.

Yi-Wen Liu teaches Mandarin Chinese at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, North Carolina, and in the summers, she teaches at immersion programs, such as Middlebury Interactive Languages. She serves as the president of the North Carolina Chinese Teachers Association. She often presents at language conferences such as ACTFL, the International Annual Conference of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, the CLTA-NC annual conference, and the FLANC fall conference. She devotes her time to organizing professional conferences, blogging about her teaching ideas, and developing online learning materials for Chinese language learners.

Zoey Liu teaches Chinese in the Fremont Union High School District in California. In 2017, she received the Yao Memorial Award for Outstanding New Teacher from CLASS. She is committed to helping students grow as global citizens by deepening their knowledge of Chinese language and culture.

Diane Neubauer, currently a PhD student in Foreign Language and ESL Education at the University of Iowa, has more than a decade of experience teaching Chinese at both elementary and secondary schools. She frequently conducts professional development workshops for language teachers and works to support and develop the community of Chinese teachers through her role as vice-chair of the ACTFL Comprehension-based Communicative Language Teaching Special Interest Group. She also regularly blogs about ideas and strategies for teaching Chinese.

Erica Pollard is the foreign language department director and an AP® Chinese instructor at Hingham Public Schools in Massachusetts. She has extensive experience in curriculum design and has developed curricula for Chinese language courses from beginner to AP® levels. She also shares her teaching insights and knowledge through her work on the College Board's AP® Chinese Language and Culture Development Committee.
