Tales and Traditions was specially created to meet the need for interesting and informative pleasure reading materials for Chinese language learners. The series presents stories and anecdotes from the Chinese literary canon that are essential for cultural fluency: sayings of classical philosophers, folk tales, legends, excerpts from great works of literature, and more. 

Volume 2 is designed for students with intermediate-low levels of proficiency in Chinese. Its four units, organized by theme, include ten literary adaptations and fables, four legends behind traditional festivals, five fantasies, and five classical love romances. Each text in the series has an interesting plotline, a vocabulary list, and post-text questions. The texts within each unit increase in difficulty, but can still be comfortably read in any order.

Each text in the series can be used for independent reading or for instructor-facilitated classroom reading. Using the stimulating discussion questions that follow each text, teachers can engage students in comprehension checks, cross-cultural comparisons, real-life reflections, and extended research. About the Author(s)

Yun Xiao is Professor of Chinese Language and Linguistics at Bryant University. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics. Her research interests are second language acquisition and pedagogy, Chinese syntax and discourse analysis, and Chinese teacher education. 

Faye Hui Xiao is Associate Professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Kansas. Her special areas of interest include modern and contemporary Chinese literature, popular culture, film studies, and gender studies. 

Ying Wang is a Visiting Instructor of Chinese at Wheaton College. She obtained her M.A. from the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and her B.A. in Chinese Langauge and Literature from Beijing University. Her areas of interest include classical Chinese literature, the history of Chinese writing, and the development, simplification, and standardization of Chinese characters.

Wenjie Liu holds a B.A. in Chinese Language and Literature and an M.A. in Sociology from Nanjing University, China. She received a second M.A. in Chinese Language and Literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research interests are in classical Chinese prose, late-Ming literature, and teaching Chinese as a second language.
