Integrated Chinese is an acclaimed Mandarin Chinese textbook series that teaches beginning language learners the skills they need to communicate effectively in Chinese. First published in 1997, it has become the most widely adopted Chinese language textbook series in North America and beyond. Now in its 4th Edition, the time-tested series has been carefully revised to meet the needs of today’s learners.

Integrated Chinese is a four-volume series designed to cover two years of study at the college level. The series’ holistic pedagogical approach ensures that students with no prior knowledge of Chinese concurrently develop and strengthen their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students who complete the series progress from novice-low to intermediate-high levels of proficiency, building a firm foundation for further study.

One of the calling cards of Integrated Chinese is its cohesive system of print and digital resources: each volume includes a Textbook, Workbook, Character Workbook, Teacher’s Resources, and free audio downloads. The 3rd Edition DVDs can be used with the 4th Edition.

The 4th Edition of Integrated Chinese is also available as a fully integrated, multimedia-rich digital course on the ChengTsui Web App™.

Integrated Chinese has become the standard text for Chinese language programs at universities in the United States for good reason. It fully lives up to its name by offering an integrated approach to teaching and learning speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. In terms of conception, design, and production values, it sets the standard for what a second language textbook should look like. They simply don't come better than this.

Thank you for the amazing 4th edition of IC. The arena of Teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language has progressed so much in the past ten years, and I am very grateful to all the editors and staff members' heart and sweat that went into the books, and to Cheng and Tsui's tireless effort in publishing good books for language and culture studies

— Lu Li, Riverdale Country School, Bronx, NY

The approach, the contents, and the layout are almost perfect; my students of first year Chinese cannot believe that they are making such great progress.

— Yu Feng, Professor of Chinese, Brandeis University

Overall, we would rate Integrated Chinese as superior, innovative, and extremely versatile. We recommend it without hesitation as an invaluable core component of a Chinese language program at both the high school and college levels.

— Lisa M. Carlucci, MS, MA, Robbinsville (NJ) High School/Washington Township Public Schools-Mercer and Franco Paoletti, PhD, East Windsor (NJ) Regional School District

I especially appreciate the new features: the clearly marked objectives and progress indicators have been very helpful to me while planning my lessons.

— Lili Pan, Lexington High School, MA

One of the things I like best about the Integrated Chinese textbook is the wonderful organization: each lesson has a very clear learning objective, and the lessons are ordered to make a clean storyline for students to follow and build up information accordingly. Each lesson contains two parts, which is manageable for students to digest new vocabulary and sentence structures. Tight control is maintained over new vocabulary, phrases and sentence structures, keeping the textbook well organized and focused and forming a supportive theme for students to recreate their own plots. Additionally, many online resources are available for teachers to use when preparing lesson plans.
