Mirai, Stage 3 and 4 Course Book

未来

By Meg Evans, Yoko Masano, Miwa Groves-Moriwaki

The Mirai, Stage 3&4 Course Book is a high-energy, full-color textbook that offers a fun but challenging approach to learning the Japanese language. It is flexibly designed to cover one or two years at the intermediate level, with a strong focus on natural language.

Written for a mixed-ability classroom, Mirai features clear explanations of language structures, idiomatic expressions and appropriate language use. Stage 3&4 follows the singing-sensation “The Bugs” on their 6-month tour of Japan. Students will learn how to shop, travel, order food, write letters, and even describe symptoms of illness in Japanese. Each of the four “parts” of the textbook, for a total of ten units, begin with a “Learning Outcomes” section that helps to focus the lesson and an “I did it!” section at the end gives students a sense of accomplishment. The units include: an “Explanation Corner” that explains key concepts and expressions, group and individual activities, study hints, information on Japan, kanji practice, vocabulary lists, and much more. Comics and games accompany learning along the way. Authentic and up-to-date photos and maps are also presented in context so that students gain an appreciation of Japanese culture as well as language.

In Stage 3&4, students will learn a total of thirty-three kanji and eighteen compounds. Romaji is not present. A companion website for Stage 3&4 contains a wealth of support material for students and teachers. The website includes review questions (auto-correcting, multiple choice, true or false and matching), helpful web links (a list of reviewed websites that support research and exploration), technology activities (drag and drop interactive activities), and a teacher’s resource center (password-protected part of the site outlining how the series aligns with language learning standards in Australia).
