Cheng & Tsui's best-loved Chinese textbook series is new, revised, and better than ever! Integrated Chinese is already the leading introductory Chinese textbook at colleges and universities around the world. The third edition has been significantly updated to meet the needs of today's students with a full-color design, fewer lessons in Level 1 to allow for more flexible pacing, more communicative activities, up-to-date vocabulary, expanded cultural notes, an exciting new storyline linking all the dialogues and readings, and more review sections. In the third edition, Level 2 has also been split into two parts to match the format of Level 1. This new arrangement covers the material from the second edition—with 10 lessons in each part—yet allows for additional exercises in each lesson and accommodates more flexibility in teaching schedules.
The series provides coordinated practice in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Throughout the series, Integrated Chinese builds on the three modes of communication - interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational - and ACTFL's "Five Cs"—Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities—to build proficiency in using the Chinese language in a variety of real-life situations. With its emphasis on practicing a broad range of written and verbal communication skills and building cultural understanding, Integrated Chinese is ideally suited for students who want a comprehensive grounding in the Chinese language.
The Integrated Chinese series is a two-year course that includes textbooks, workbooks, character workbooks, online workbooks, audio CDs, multimedia resources, and teacher's handbooks. Materials are available in both simplified character and traditional character versions.
Based on teacher feedback, the scope and sequence has been adjusted to move at a more manageable pace for students. The book is also now in a 4-color format, the dialogues include a new storyline more appealing to students, and Level 2 is divided into two parts. View a transition guide to see what else is new!
There are 2 levels, each divided into 2 parts; one for each semester at the college level and one for each year at the high school level.
Each part of the Integrated Chinese series consists of a textbook, workbook, character workbook, and audio CDs or MP3 files. Level 1 also offers an online version of the workbook, powered by Quia. Browse components from the series.
Traditional characters are the more complex written form of Chinese characters common to Hong Kong and Taiwan. Simplified characters were brought in by the mainland government after the 1949 Communist revolution.
The character workbook offers practice in stroke order and character writing, while the regular workbook includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing exercises as well as grammar practice.
Both versions of the audio CD have the same content. The Lab version includes a license to copy the CD for up to 20 students, or to upload the files onto a password protected server.
The MP3 audio files include the same content as the audio CDs, as well as free access to downloadable bonus tracks: alternate slower versions and dialogues with pauses.
Click on the "Download" tab on the top of the home page, then on "Integrated Chinese". You will need to enter your product key before accessing the files.
The Multimedia Companion features a wide variety of interactive games and practice on all four language skills. The Workbook DVD contains acted-out versions of dialogues in the Integrated Chinese Level 1 Part 1 workbook (2nd Edition). The audio CDs includes all the dialogues, vocabulary, and pronunciation exercises from each lesson of the textbook, as well as the listening exercises from each lesson of the workbook. The 3rd edition CDs also include the detailed introduction to Chinese phonetics and pronunciation from the textbook.

Yes. Free PowerPoint presentations about the grammar taught in Integrated Chinese Level 1 Part 1 have been developed by Ying Yang of the University of California, Berkeley and are available on the Integrated Chinese companion site on PeerSource, along with other supplementatl materials for the series.
For general playback issues, please see the FAQ "Why am I having trouble playing a DVD on my computer?" under General.
Please note that the individual software and hardware settings may affect certain aspects of playback -- for example, the video quality may be slightly lower than that of a conventional player, or non-English subtitles may be labelled in the software as "Chinese (Taiwan)". For best results, we recommend playing the DVDs on a conventional player.
The approach, the contents, and the layout are almost perfect; my students of first year Chinese cannot believe that they are making such great progress.

This new edition of Integrated Chinese is an outstanding achievement. Complete with interesting cultural notes, useful authentic materials, and a wealth of interactive exercises, the authors have outdone themselves AGAIN!
Dr. Zoe Wu, Chinese Language Program, Pasadena City College
[I've] been studying languages since 3rd grade (I'm 46), and have seen language courses come and go. I've always looked for the "ideal" course for every language I've studied. I've been successful for the most part, and now I've found Integrated Chinese.
Student from Mukilteo, WA
Overall, we would rate Integrated Chinese as superior, innovative, and extremely versatile. We recommend it without hesitation as an invaluable core component of a Chinese language program at both the high school and college levels.
