Adventures in Japanese, Volume 1 Textbook, 3rd Edition
アドヴェンチャー日本語
Ideal For: Beginning-level high school students.
In Adventures in Japanese, Volume 1 textbook, students learn to talk about themselves (family, daily routines, hobbies, school) and learn about Japanese culture.
Each lesson begins with two or three tasks, which are the proficiency goals for each lesson. Communication is emphasized, and students constantly practice speaking with one another and the teacher on topics relevant to students’ daily lives. Review questions at the end of every other lesson require a proficiency in asking and answering questions on the lesson topics, and test students’ progress relative to each lesson’s goals.
Volume 1 gently introduces hiragana and katakana in order to acclimate the student to the use of characters. Seventeen basic kanji are introduced. At the end of Volume 1, students will have learned to write and correctly use hiragana and katakana, two of the basic Japanese syllabaries. Romanization is provided for hiragana until Lesson 4. Katakana is introduced after Lesson 8, and romanization is provided for katakana up to Lesson 10. In addition to hiragana and katakana, students will learn to write a few kanji.
After completing this volume, students will be able to communicate successfully at a very basic level both orally and in writing.
