Chinese characters have developed over thousands of years, some characters requiring as many as thirty-three separate strokes. In the 1950s, a Character Reform Committee in the PRC systematically simplified the written language in order to encourage literacy. These ensuing reforms reduced the number of character strokes by an average of one half. This simplified character set (简体, jiǎntǐ) appears in all print media in Mainland China and Singapore. However, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and various diasporic Chinese communities still use the traditional, more complex character set (繁體, fántǐ). As part of our commitment to "Bringing Asia to the World", Cheng & Tsui offers many language learning materials in both simplified and traditional characters. Look for these specifications as part of each product description.
"Ind" and "Lab" refer to "Individual" and "Language Lab" versions of our software and audio items.
Cheng & Tsui offers both Language Lab (Lab) and Individual (Ind) versions of our software and audio learning materials. Lab versions are specifically for use in a language laboratory or classroom setting, and include a site license. Teachers may offer the lab version to multiple students in a language lab, or in the classroom. Individual versions of software and audio learning materials are for individual use only and duplication is prohibited. There is no difference in the material for Individual and Language Lab versions.
The fee for the site license covers development costs of materials and software, which means that those costs are kept separate from the costs of the printed textbooks. This enables us to keep textbooks as affordable as possible for all of our institutional customers, whether or not they use a site license.
Site licenses never expire, and upgrades are available at a significant discount.
The Cheng & Tsui Professional Development Award is given annually to support the attendance of pre-collegiate (including heritage school) and collegiate teachers at training workshops, seminars, conferences, and other in-service learning experiences at local, national, or international levels; and/or to collaborate with a mentor teacher. Adventures in Japanese
There are few changes to the new edition, mostly expanded cultural notes and new introductions to the textbooks. Volume 3 also has an expanded cumulative glossary.
Yes, it is compatible. They may be used together.
Yes. By the end of Volume 4, students will have learned 340 kanji and a wealth of culture in advance of the AP Japanese exam. For additional preparation, teachers can supplement Volume 3 and 4 with Further Adventures in Japanese and Cheng & Tsui's Strive for a 5 AP Japanese Practice Tests.
Hiragana is introduced starting in the first lesson of Volume 1. Katakana is introduced from the middle of Volume 1. Kanji is introduced throughout Volume 1 and all later volumes.
The Hiragana-Katakana Workbook emphasizes writing through practice grids, and include exercises that combine romaji fill-in-the-blank exercises, illustrated matching, and ready-made flash cards. The regular workbook includes reading, writing, and listening exercises that correspond to the textbook.
The Multimedia CD-ROM, available for Volume 1 and Volume 2, contains a mix of fast-paced games, electronic flashcards, and colorful exercises. The CD-ROM also includes a score report where students can get instant feedback on their answers. The audio CDs contain all of the dialogues, vocabulary, and pronunciation guides for the textbooks.
The dictionary serves the function of a cumulative glossary for the vocabulary from all four volumes of Adventures in Japanese. It also contains both a Japanese-English and English-Japanese word list, sample sentences from each grammar section of the series, a kanji list, verb conjugation chart, and hiragana and katakana charts.
By including a dictionary instead of having a glossary included in the books, it keeps the textbooks a more manageable size for the students.
The teacher's handbooks include additional resources and course materials, including overhead materials, sample quizzes, review tests and exams, as well as oral interview topics and answer keys.
The Images CD-ROM contains full-color illustrations from Volumes 1 and 2, perfect for vocabulary practice and enhancing worksheets, tests, quizzes, or flashcards.
Chinese for Tomorrow
Chinese for Tomorrow uses an innovative, five-skilled approach that utilizes typing or Computer Chinese (CC) as a fifth skill and learning tool. Early emphasis on pinyin keyboarding lets learners immediately use the language in a practical and engaging way. Handwriting is introduced more gradually. Learn more about the pedagogy behind the series from the authors with the recorded online seminar, Computer Chinese: A New Five-Skilled Approach to Teaching Chinese.
The completion of both volumes is the equivalent of two years of college or four years of high school study.
Yes. Chinese for Tomorrow is suitable for high school as well as college. Each book covers at least two years of high school study.
Yes, this series is highly adaptable for independent study. The grammar book can also be used alongside other textbook series for additional grammar practice.
Free audio downloads, supplemental readings, and flashcards for each lesson are available on the Chinese for Tomorrow companion site, on PeerSource.
The Grammar Book provides additional grammatical explanation and exercises to those already mentioned in the textbook. Can be used independently or along with other textbook series in addition to Chinese for Tomorrow. Learn more about the series' unique approach to grammar with the recorded online seminar, Is it Necessary to Develop Grammar Learning Materials?.
Chinese for Tomorrow has proven to work very well with heritage students as well as students with no background in the language. Through field-testing, both groups learned Chinese characters more quickly and had higher vocabulary retention rates than those using traditional methods. Learn more about the pedagogy behind the series from the authors with the recorded online seminar, Computer Chinese: A New Five-Skilled Approach to Teaching Chinese.
The textbook introduction suggests quite a few options for obtaining Chinese word processing software, and includes an appendix with instructions on how to set up your Mac or PC to type Chinese characters.
The authors believe that handwriting and Computer Chinese (CC) should complement each other. In the first two volumes students practice writing five to ten characters in each lesson, and focus on handwriting in the third year. The series also gives teachers flexibility to augment lessons with additional writing practice.
Culture is integrated throughout the texts and language notes. Each lesson also includes a section on Chinese customs and culture.

Chinese Odyssey is designed for college, but has had demonstrated success at the high school level.

The CD-ROM can be used alone, as it contains materials from both the textbook and workbook, and students send their homework answers to the teacher electronically. The CD-ROM can also be used in conjunction with just the printed textbook, or with the workbook as well. Finally, the textbook, workbook, and audio CDs can be used without the CD-ROM.
Yes, adult learners should try the CD-ROM, which is highly interactive and will provide the answers to all of the exercises.
The volumes were originally printed in separate versions. When the first two volumes were reprinted we combined the simplified and traditional versions based on demand.
Culture is incorporated throughout the dialogues and highlighted in notes on the texts. The dialogues are also rich in colloquial expressions, presenting students with an authentic introduction to the language.
Chinese Odyssey textbooks include comprehensive grammar sections that lay out sentence structures and extensive grammar notes with exercises.

Yes. The bilingual teacher guides are crucial for utilizing the Flying With Chinese approach effectively, and include comprehensive lesson plans, additional activities, sections on suggested sequence for teaching, and outlines of important concepts and useful strategies for the elementary classroom.
The listening material on the audio CDs contains a reading of the story, "I Can" statements, and the songs from the corresponding student book. The teacher audio CDs contain the same information as the student CD plus the audio portion to listening exercises in the workbook.

Yes. They are an important part of the course.
Each level contains 120 cards and covers between 157-213 characters.

Integrated Chinese
Based on teacher feedback, the scope and sequence has been adjusted to move at a more manageable pace for students. The book is also now in a four-color format, the dialogues include a new storyline more appealing to students, and Level 2 is divided into two parts. View a transition guide to see what else is new!

Each part of the Integrated Chinese series consists of a textbook, workbook, online versions of the workbook (powered by Quia), character workbook, and audio CDs or MP3 files. Click here to browse the series' components.
