Dear Friends and Customers,

It brings me great joy to celebrate the Year of the Dragon with you as we continue in our mission of Bringing Asia to the World. This year we are proud to offer Arabic language-learning materials in addition to our growing list of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean titles.

Marhaba! An Invitation to Arabic (p. 56) is an innovative, student-centered curriculum for teaching Arabic that has proven to be effective in a wide range of learning environments. To supplement Marhaba! or any other core curriculum is our Arabic graded reader series Small Wonders: Large Strides in Reading Arabic (p. 58). Presented in full color and centered on topics from the natural world such as bees, flowers, and the eye, it is designed to encourage interdisciplinary learning through Arabic.

This year, we have completed the final components of our highly praised secondary school series, Huanying: An Invitation to Chinese (p. 12). The Huanying Textbooks present lively, relevant, and standards-based language instruction, while the Student Workbooks offer a wealth of exercises for individuals, pairs, and groups. Rounded out by robust Teacher’s Books, this series allows educators to focus on their students and get them excited about learning Chinese.

For our youngest learners and their teachers and parents, we are thrilled to announce the release of our first children’s music collection, Little Dragon Tales (p. 22). In this CD, the Emmy-winning producer Dave Liang of The Shanghai Restoration Project has reinterpreted classic Chinese children’s songs with an energetic and contemporary sound. We are also excited to offer two new titles designed for K-3 classrooms: All-in-One Chinese Fun (p. 20) and Step by Step (p. 21). Both of these publications are designed to meet the needs of young students with flexible approaches that can be easily adapted so that every student can learn to read, sing, and play games in Chinese.

As we move into the digital age, we are delighted to announce the publication of eBook versions of our most recent literature anthologies: Digital Geishas and Talking Frogs (p. 53), Another Kind of Paradise (p. 60), and The Lotus Singers (p. 61). Finally, I want to thank you for your loyal support. You are among our most important resources— and the key to our success. I have always been grateful for your ideas and suggestions. This year, please share them with us by filling out the brief questionnaire on page 63. Let us know how we can continue to work together in “Bringing Asia to the World.”

Dear Friends and Customers,

It is hard to believe how much has changed since Cheng & Tsui was founded in 1979. Back then, the fax machine was revolutionary, cell phones didn’t exist, and the Internet sounded like science fiction. We produced our first catalog by typing the English and handwriting the Chinese and Japanese. Today, while paper textbooks remain central to language learning, technology plays an ever-increasing role.

Through such technology, we now offer Interactive Integrated Chinese Online Workbooks and Integrated Chinese eTextbooks for Chinese Biographies (p. 30), and their companion website, www.chinesebiographies.com. The first two readers are about cultural icons Yao Ming and Lang Lang, and are enhanced with free online materials such as audio downloads, comprehension exercises, crossword puzzles, English translations, and vocabulary lists. Expect to see more soon, as we introduce interactive supplements for Adventures in Japanese (pp. 42–43) and other publications.

In addition to online resources, we have launched forums for students and educators to communicate with each other and with us. Cheng & Tsui’s Blog features interviews with authors, travel tales, and classroom chronicles. Our Facebook page, Twitter feed, and YouTube channel offer many perspectives on Asian language learning and culture. We’ll connect you with interesting articles, stories, and videos. You’ll also be the first to know about our newest publications and activities. More importantly is what you can do through these forums—help build a community of people from around the world who share our belief in the significance of learning about different cultures and their languages.

Of course, no matter how things have changed, we always wish to hear from you, whether it’s by phone, mail, fax, email, post, or tweet!

2010 Cheng & Tsui Professional Development Award Recipients

Director of Marketing Jason Fishbein presented The Cheng & Tsui Professional Development Award at the American Association of Teachers of Korean’s conference at Washington University in St. Louis. Congratulations to recipients Hyunjung Ahn (left) of the University of Washington and Yon-Soo Kang (right) of The Ohio State University. “Cheng & Tsui shares the AATK’s mission of promoting Korean language and culture,” he said. “We were thrilled to recognize such passionate teachers and to show our support to the AATK.” Teachers of Korean at all levels, K-12 as well as higher education, are eligible to apply for support from the Cheng & Tsui Professional Development Fund. Annual professional development awards are also granted to members of the Chinese Language Teachers Association and the Association of Teachers of Japanese.
